Mr. Lopes is a founding partner of Uqbar Educação e Informação Financeira Avançada, a financial knowledge company based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Prior to creating Uqbar he was senior adviser to the president of the Brazilian development bank, BNDES, during President Fernando Henrique Cardoso's Administration. He was responsible for the development and initial implementation of an asset-liability management program for the bank.

Before joining BNDES, Mr. Lopes headed J.P. Morgan's structured finance business in Latin America based in New York. Structured transactions involved existing asset and future flow securitizations and operations with multilateral support, and political risk coverage. The role of Mr. Lopes and his team encompassed origination and execution of all structured opportunities with Latin American clients and affiliates, including both traditional and synthethic securitization using credit derivatives, and addressing existing asset and future flow. Mr. Lopes and his team focused on financial institutions regarding balance sheet restructuring, asset repackaging, and liquidity and capital management strategies.

Mr. Lopes joined J.P. Morgan from Credit Agricole Indosuez group, where he was a Managing Director in charge of structured finance and distribution based in London and Paris. He helped develop CAI into a leading player in emerging markets debt and structured innovative products such as the purchase of credit protection on emerging market government default on local and international debt obligations through credit derivatives (over USD2.5 billion for Brazil and USD1 billion for Russia), and the first two CBO's issued by Russian banks.

Mr. Lopes has participated in several seminars and conferences on Emerging Markets in Europe, Asia, North and South America. He graduated from Brazil's Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica in 1988. He is married, has two children, and is fluent in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
